014 1948c Madeline Solimando crocheted doily
Madeline Solimando (Mommie Lee) created this piece between 1948 and 1950. Her mother, Conchetta Verrochi, first taught her to crochet in 1910 when Mommie Lee was a young child, around ten years old, living on Ceylon Street in Dorchester. Crocheting, along with afghan making, piano playing, and listening to the phonograph were popular forms of entertainment in an era where TV had not yet been invented. Most nights, after the day's work, Madeline would sit in the kitchen, the family's gathering spot and social center, near the coal stove with her mother and crochet. "My mother and I were two pals," she recalled. "Rose was always busy with books, and I was always with my mother." Mommie Lee picked up her childhood craft again in 1948, after moving to 331 Adams Street in Milton. There, Michael's aunt, Theresa Bello, taught her more complex crochet patterns and shapes. In these days she was prolific. "I never sat down and did nothing. Never," she recounted. Special crochet thread was purchased by the case, "wherever I could get a bargain." Mommie Lee would sit in the TV room in her armchair "for hours after I did my work," and crochet or knit afghans while Daddy Solimando watched sports on TV. Many of these pieces have been preserved. When Mommie Lee lost her sight, she had to stop her favorite pastimes of crocheting and afghan making. Even though she can no longer create these lovely works, many still remain to be enjoyed by generations of family members to come. [Source credit: Concetta Solimando Kelley]
